Easy family craft ideas to celebrate Easter with the kids

It’s an exciting time of year – we’ve officially entered Spring and it’s nearly time to celebrate Easter!

I love getting crafty all year round, but there’s really no better time than Easter to have a bit of fun with the kids and come up with some super crafty creations. There’s no limits when it comes to Easter arts and crafts as it gives us a chance to experiment with all of the fun, bright Spring colours and create just about anything from Easter bunnies to finger puppets and wacky egg decorations.

I’ve picked out some of my favourite Easter craft ideas to inspire you to have some fun with the kids this Easter holidays – and I can’t wait to get stuck into some of these fun activities with my daughter Sofia!

1. Origami Bunnies

Try something a little different this Easter and experiment with some super cute origami bunnies. Never tried origami before and not sure where to start? Don’t panic, it’s a lot easier than it looks!

Origami bunnies are a perfect inexpensive craft idea to get the kids involved and help them to concentrate on accurate crafting. Chances are, you’ll already have all of the equipment needed at home.

Tools you’ll need:

  • A square piece of paper (any size)
  • Marker pens to decorate

I’ve found a super simple tutorial by Red Ted Art to help get you started on creating your origami bunnies. Check it out below:

2. Bunny Finger Puppets

Finger puppets are the perfect way to keep the kids entertained for hours on end. Of course, you can buy ready-made packs of them, but where’s the fun in that? Stretch out the fun of finger puppets by letting the kids make them from scratch – and turn it into an Easter themed activity by making Easter bunnies.

Not only is it a fun activity for all the kids, but it also helps them to try out a different craft skill – sewing.

Tools you’ll need:

  • 1 x A4 piece of felt
  • 2 x small black buttons
  • Embroidery cotton
  • Black thread
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Bunny finger puppets template (try this one from Kidspot)

3. Easter bonnets

Chances are, you might already be lined up to make an Easter bonnet for your child’s school bonnet competition – well known to bring out the competitive streak in all us mums, but still a super fun activity. They don’t have to be solely reserved for school wear though, as you can have just as much fun making them to watch the kids parade around the front room in them.

The options really are endless when it comes to creating Easter bonnets, and there’s absolutely no creative limits. I always find that using a sun hat is the usually the best option for this, as the wide brim gives a good amount of room to really pack on the cute little decorations. I personally love incorporating loads of bright, spring colours in the form of flowers, pipe cleaners, chicks, bunnies, eggs, shredded tissue paper and anything else that I come across.

As there’s really so many different styles of creating Easter bonnets, I’ve picked out a few top blog posts packed with inspiration:

Just remember, let the kids join in and have plenty of fun creating your masterpiece!

These pompom chicks are an Easter DIY staple – super fun and easy to make. The beauty of these pompoms is that there are limited materials and skills required, and once you’ve mastered the pompom making technique – you can really make anything out of them! The same method can be applied to creating bunnies, sheep and just about any other animal you can think of. Time to let your imagination run wild…

Tools you’ll need:

  • Yellow wool
  • Orange felt
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue
  • Scissors

5. Easter String Eggs

Why not add a bit more fun to your Easter egg hunt with these mega cute string eggs? I love finding new and unique ideas like this, and then finding out they’re a lot easier to make than they look! I can see these being a super fun activity for the kids, with a bit of adult supervision, and the end result looks great!

Throw in a few mini individual wrapped eggs and you’re all set for a mega fun Easter egg hunt!

Tools you’ll need:

  • Water balloons
  • PVA glue
  • Water
  • Cotton yarn (any colour of choice)

6. Papier Maché Easter Eggs

Who doesn’t love a bit of Papier Maché? This messy crafting is super fun for the kids, and parents too! Not only is it an exciting activity for all, but the end result also makes for a perfect treat for the kids on Easter, if you choose to fill it with a few treats inside.

Tools you’ll need:

  • Balloon

The end result can be decorated in any Easter fashion, it’s really up to the creative imagination. If you’re opting to add a few chocolatey treats inside the egg, make sure that the egg is sturdy enough, using a few layers of papier maché.

11. Toilet Roll Bunnies

While we’re on the subject of re-using and re-cycling, we thought we’d include an idea which utilises everyone’s favourite craft item – an empty toilet roll! It’s really quite weird and wonderful what can be done once you get to the end of the toilet roll – and making cute little Easter bunnies is just one of them.

A great Easter decoration which is fun to make for the kids, and is perfect to stash any small Easter treats for them (kind of like an Easter stocking!)

  • Empty toilet roll cardboard
  • Coloured paper
  • Small piece of foam board
  • Googly eyes
  • A button for the nose
