Enjoyable Rainy Day Activities for Families
Nobody enjoys a rainy day as it limits the options we can do to pass the time. So, we have created a list of enjoyable activities you can do when the weather is dull outside.
Bake and decorate
A simple yet fun activity that is perfect for a rainy day is baking. Everybody loves baking their own treats, especially children as they will go crazy to decorate the cake the way they would like it to be. So, make sure before buying the ingredients, get as much decoration as possible so the kids can go wild when it’s finished.
If your kids would like to bake something simple, then we suggest baking cupcakes. They’re easy to make and don’t take long to bake in the oven too, and once the sponge is a beautiful golden brown colour – let the decorating commence!
There may be a number of ingredients you have to buy, however there are only 7 steps to follow so it’s an easy method!
Ingredients
- 110g softened butter
- 110g golden caster sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ½ tablespoon of vanilla extract
- 110g self-raising flour
Buttercream Ingredients
- 150g softened butter
- 300g icing sugar
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoon of milk
- Food colour paste of your choice
To begin baking the cakes, you will need to heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and fill a cupcake tray with cases. Then using an electric whisk, beat the butter and golden caster sugar together until fluffy. Once fluffy, add 2 large eggs and whisk them in one at a time.
Next, you will need to add ½ tablespoon of vanilla extract, 110g of self-raising flour and a pinch of salt then whisk until the mixture is combined. Then, spoon the mixture into the cupcake bases. This will need to bake in the oven for 15 minutes until the cupcakes are golden brown.
Make sure to put a skewer into the middle of each cake and it needs to come out clean. If not then the cakes need longer to cook, but once baked, take the cupcakes out of the oven and leave on the side to cool.
Now the cupcakes are cooked, you need to create the buttercream. To begin making the buttercream, you will need to whisk 150g of softened butter till it’s soft then add all the icing sugar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Once this mixture has been whisked and is nice and smooth, you’re ready to add this onto the cupcakes and go crazy with decorating!
Disney movie marathon
When it’s raining outside there is not much you can do so it’s best to stay inside where it’s nice and warm. But the dull and gloomy rain can also affect everyone’s mood in the house as we all can have a lazy attitude.
Being lazy isn’t necessarily a bad thing as we all need days where we just do nothing and relax. The best way to relax at home on a rainy day is to have a movie day, as you can get comfy under the duvet on the sofa and not move all day!
The movie marathon we suggest you have is a Disney one, and this is because they have a huge amount of movies that are for everyone. If you have the Disney+ streaming service then you’re in for a treat because we guarantee you will not leave your sofa once you start watching a film!
The majority of Disney films are for children, however, because they’re so great even adults love watching them as they grew up with these movies. The main films that stand out immediately are Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Ratatouille plus much more.
A massive hit from Disney is of course the princess films they have. These are huge hits and have attracted so much attention from all females around the world because they love the characters. If you have a young daughter then encourage her to dress up as their favourite princess and you can watch the movie together – Making the experience more memorable.
Finally, possibly one of the biggest hits about a Disney marathon, is the fact they own the rights to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is a ginormous film company that has produced some of the best superhero films ever made and continues to do so. The fanbase Marvel has is unparallel and it’s hard to not love these movies – they’re that good!
If you’re not a big fan of superhero movies then there is also the Star Wars saga that is now owned by Disney. Every parent has grown up with Star Wars and because the majority of them loved it, they now encourage their children to watch these movies too – and we push you to do the same!

DIY Musical Instrument

A great activity for your kids to take part in is to create their very own musical instrument, and it won’t take long to create either! There are some stages that will require a parent as it may involve cutting material with scissors, however if you have safety scissors then this is great practise for your kids to begin cutting shapes.

DIY Science Experiment
From a young age, children are fascinated by science experiments they witness in the classroom as they’re beginning to understand the reactions that occur when mixing chemicals. With kids being at a young age, it’s important to not let them experiment with harmful chemicals as this is a recipe for disaster.
So, a fun and easy experiment your kids can get involved with is the coke and Mentos experiment. Before you try this, be warned – it will get messy! So we advise you to use diet coke to prevent stickiness to your surface and if you can go outside for this experiment – that would be ideal.
Now, make sure you have plenty of room to do this experiment and you have your Mentos and diet coke ready. Simply, remove the lid of the bottle of coke and add Mentos to a test tube. If you don’t have a test tube, then don’t worry as this is not essential. Now, add the Mentos to the coke and witness a huge eruption occur from the bottle, it will blow you away with how crazy the explosion is!
This is a very messy experiment, however your kids will love it and will most likely want to repeat it. But if you do decide to repeat the experiment, then just make sure that you have a lot of space for the coke to spill everywhere!
